Wynter took a while to warm up to, and although she improved I think the next books will determine how I end up liking her. Until close the end, she didn't seem to be all that important other than as the focal point through which we got to view all the more important men in the story.

And Razi... I liked him for a while but he started to bug me later. The incident with the key in particular just seemed rather cruel even if he was trying to protect everyone. He needed to quit thinking he knew what was best for everyone and let them decide for themselves if they wanted to be protected.

There was a lot of sickening goodness going on, wasn't there? I'm not quite sure why everyone was so enamored of Wynter either.

I definitely agree the end was weaker. That was getting a bit over the top.

But I am rather curious about the cause of all the mayhem in the kingdom.Kristenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01700004253248186101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146259764837045872.post-25309105092452208692010-05-20T20:50:24.784-04:002010-05-20T20:50:24.784-04:00Kristen, I completely hear where you are coming fr...Kristen, I completely hear where you are coming from. I generally was entertained by the book, but it's rather...simple. And dear LORD were some of the characters frustrating - Wynter in particular. (And Angie, I totally feel you on wanting to wring Razi's neck!)

I think more than anything else, my biggest problems with this one was 1.) how everyone was so sickeningly good (on that note, how EVERYONE and their mom loves Wynter so much and must protect her, delicate blossom that she is); and 2.) the shameless attempts at emotional melodrama, especially at the end of the book.

But...to each their own, right?Theahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11138984974139025278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146259764837045872.post-60612588594473060302010-05-17T23:15:37.051-04:002010-05-17T23:15:37.051-04:00Orannia - Good but not great sums up my opinion on...Orannia - Good but not great sums up my opinion on it, anyway. It held my attention while I was reading it, but it didn't stick with me for that long afterward plus there were some times the characters irritated me. I do want to read the next one but I also do not desperately want it RIGHT NOW.

Oh, going through Carol Berg's backlist sounds like fun! Any idea which book you'll read next from it? There's one series I haven't read yet and I still need to read her newest book, too. I'm hoping to get to it next month but there are a lot of books I want to get to then...Kristenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01700004253248186101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146259764837045872.post-30364738994544356902010-05-17T20:48:17.828-04:002010-05-17T20:48:17.828-04:00Great review Kristen - thank you! I might work my way through Carol Berg's backlist first...and the rest of the NightRunner series (which Renee pointed me towards :)

*makes note that characters can cause exasperation*oranniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14007355589161084262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146259764837045872.post-50228570642012240452010-05-16T18:44:04.886-04:002010-05-16T18:44:04.886-04:00Angie - I've mostly heard positive things abou...Angie - I've mostly heard positive things about this book as well, but I also can completely understand your perspective as well as your wish to wring Razi's neck. There were times I was annoyed by character's actions - it's just one of those books I found enjoyable and entertaining in spite of any problems I may have had with it.Kristenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01700004253248186101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146259764837045872.post-87399420508148185012010-05-16T18:33:03.715-04:002010-05-16T18:33:03.715-04:00I'm glad you liked it, Kristen.
