Best Women Writers in Science Fiction and Fantasy

The latest Mind Meld over at SF Signal asks the question: Who are the best female writers in science fiction and/or fantasy? Head on over to read what several authors, publishers, and bloggers (including myself) had to say on the subject.

Who are your favorite female authors who write science fiction and/or fantasy? There are so many I enjoy and so many yet to discover...

Well, Sarah Monette is definitely at the top of my list. So is Janny Wurts! I would also add Sandra Macdonald - she write sci-fi and I loved her first book (The Outback Stars).

*heading off to check which authors are on the list*

Sorry Kristen. I've been trying to work out - what is the first book in Storm Constantine Wraeththu series please? I figured I would give it a go :)

That was a great discussion. All of my favorite authors have been mentioned at least once, and there were some new names I should pay attention to.

I was especially tickled to see mentions of:

Barbara Hambly's Sun Wolf and Starhawk books. The first, Ladies of Mandrygin, will always have a stop on my 15 Favorite SF/F Books. I've re-read it 3 or 4 times.

Tamar Yellin and Lane Robins mentioned by Jay Tomio. The former I've had my eye on for a bit, this is just the kind of push I needed to finally get her book.

L. Timmel Duchamp snuck in with a long list of names by Joe Sherry

Elisabeth Vonarburg - she's a French Canadian scifi writer, and I've already bought 4-5 of her books, but still waiting to read.

Some authors I didn't see mentioned that would also be on my (very long) list:

Karin Lowachee
Joan D. Vinge
Mary Gentle
Ekaterina Sedia
Laura Resnick
Chris Moriarty
Julie E. Czerneda
Tanya Huff
Jane Jensen
Lisa Mason
Kay Kenyon
Pamela Sargent
Valerie J. Freireich
Sharon Shinn

Orannia - Janny Wurts is on my to-read list now. I added To Ride Hell's Chasm when you mentioned it before. The Outback Stars is on my bookshelf; it's not one I've read yet though.

No problem, Orannia, I am thrilled that you want to read Wraeththu! I can't wait to see what you think of it. The first book is The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit. The original edition of this is actually out of print unless you get it in the Wraeththu omnibus that contains the entire original trilogy. However, there is a newer, revised version that's supposed to have quite a bit of additions and changes. I have the omnibus so I haven't read this one, though. The new revised editions tend to be somewhat pricy so it may even be cheaper to get the Wraeththu omnibus if you were going to purchase it.

This is another series where I absolutely loved the characters.

Nepthis - There were a lot of names on that list; I was happy to see such a wide variety.

I'll have to look up Tamar Yellin; she's not one I've heard of. Lane Robins is on my list of new authors to watch out for, though. I just got her newest books Kings & Assassins in the mail today (along with my first books by Sharon Shinn and Tananarive Due).

I still need to read L. Timmel DuChamp too. And many of the others on your list, several of which are on my bookshelf or wishlist.

Thank you Kristen! I'll keep an eye out for The Enchantment of Flesh and Spirit :) And I look forward to hearing what you think of To Ride Hell's Chasm :)

Orannia - Not sure when I'll get To Ride Hell's Chasm. I was waiting for at least August since I heard it was being re-released and was hoping it would be cheaper then (not sure what format they're going to have it in but right now it's trade paperback so was hoping for mass market).
