Read for Free: Vera Nazarian and Brandon Sanderson

Vera Nazarian's novel Dreams of the Compass Rose is available in several different formats as a free download for 90 days. (Note: I tried this link earlier and it did work but there seems to be an issue with it at the moment. Hopefully it will clear up soon - there just may be too many people trying to download it at the moment.) I haven't read this one, but I did really enjoy Lords of Rainbow by Vera Nazarian and the description sounds rather intriguing:

In the vein of The One Thousand and One Nights, Tanith Lee's Flat Earth, and Catherynne M. Valente's The Orphan's Tales...

The Compass Rose universe—an ancient milieu where places have no names, cities spring forth like bouquets in the desert, gods and dreams walk the scorching sands in the South, ice floats like mirror shards upon the Northern sea, islands that do not exist are found in the East, death chases a thief on the rooftops of a Western city, immortal love spans time, and directions are intertwined into one road we all travel....

You come to this place when you wonder, and sometimes, only when you dream.

The prelude, prologue and first three chapters of The Way of Kings, the first book in Brandon Sanderson's new series The Stormlight Archive, is available on Tor.com. It is required that you register and log in to read it, but registration is free. The Way of Kings will be released in hardcover on August 31.

Widely acclaimed for his work completing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time saga, Brandon Sanderson now begins a grand cycle of his own, one every bit as ambitious and immersive.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths,

Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.

and return to men the Shards they once bore.

The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Free Revised Version of Primary Inversion

I signed up for a Catherine Asaro mailing list a while ago when I was desperately trying to find a copy of The Radiant Seas. Yesterday Catherine sent an email to the group to let us know that a revised version of her first novel Primary Inversion is now available at the Baen Free Library. Here is what she had to say about the new revisions:
This is a rewritten version of my first published book. I'm a better writer now, so I went through the entire book earlier this year, polished, streamlined, and updated it. If you're in the music business, you could say I remastered it ;-)
I am curious about the changes since I thought this was already a pretty good book. Primary Inversion was one of those books I couldn't put down and read in about 2 days (review). Actually, it was the book that convinced me I might like space opera after all.

There are many other titles also available for free at the Baen Free Library.

Tor.com has officially launched. I just signed up a little while ago to check it out. It has some free stories, an art gallery, and a forum for discussing science fiction and fantasy. Also, all the e-books and wallpaper Tor gave away through email are available for free in several different formats through July 27. So if you missed a few of the books when they were giving away one a week, you can go back and get the rest.

Books available are:

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Old Man’s War by John Scalzi
Spin by Robert Charles Wilson
Farthing by Jo Walton
The Outstretched Shadow by Mercedies Lackey & James Mallory
Crystal Rain by Tobias Buckell
Lord of the Isles by David Drake
Through Wolf's Eyes by Jane Lindskold
The Disunited States of America by Harry Turtledove
Reiffen's Choice by S.C. Butler

Battlestar Galactica by Jeffrey A. Carver
Flash by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
Soul by Tobsha Learner
Darkness of the Light by Peter David
Three Shadows by Cyril Pedrosa

I haven't read most of those but a lot of them are on the to-read list, so I'd say it's a pretty good selection.

Free E-book: City of Pearl by Karen Traviss

Since I just missed the last copy of City of Pearl when I made my Clarkesworld Books order, the owner of the store sent me an email to let me know that Eos currently has this available as a free e-book. It will be available through the end of August. They had Robin Hobb's Shaman's Crossing up for download a while ago so perhaps they will put up a new book after that.

I've been looking forward to reading this one for a while, although I'll probably wait and purchase a copy since I'm not particularly fond of reading long text on the computer screen.

Cool Book Giveaway Contests

I just saw on Ann Aguirre's blog that Renegade, the short story about March from the Jax Universe is up on the "Free Reads" section on her site now. If you read the story and leave a comment on that post about what you liked best or liked the least about the story, you will have a chance to win a galley of the next novel in the Jax series, Wanderlust. The contest runs until June 2.

Also, I saw news on another interesting contest over at The Book Swede today. Chris reviewed and enjoyed Midnight Never Come by Marie Brennan, and announced that there will be a contest on the author's new website for not only a signed copy of the book but also a 250 pound book voucher to spend at the book retailer of your choice. That sounds like a contest to look out for.

Read American Gods for Free

A little while ago I posted about a post in Neil Gaiman's blog in which he asked readers to vote for a book to make available online for free for a month. The winner of the poll was American Gods, and it is now available here.

Vote for Free Ebook by Neil Gaiman

To celebrate the 7th birthday of his blog, Neil Gaiman is going to make one of his books available online for free for a month. The free book has not yet been determined as Neil has requested readers to vote for the book they think is the best starting point for someone who has never read any of his work. American Gods is winning by a lot right now, and the closest contender after it is Neverwhere.

To read more and vote, go here.

Free Ebooks from Tor

By registering on Tor's website, you can receive emails containing free digital science fiction and fantasy books. The first book is going to be Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn: The Final Empire (a rather good book), and it will be followed by Old Man's War by John Scalzi. After that, they will send more books but the site does not say what they are.

Brandon Sanderson News: Signed and Free Books

Brandon Sanderson, the author who will be writing the final Wheel of Time book, has a limited number of signed hardcover copies of the first book in his Mistborn trilogy available on his website for $20 each. Last month I got a signed first edition copy of this book off of bookcloseouts.com (they're all out now, unfortunately) since it should be a good collector's item someday... plus I just love signed books. I'm a little over 100 pages into it now, and so far it is good. The Well of Ascension, the second book in the series, is currently out in hardcover, and the final book The Hero of Ages is scheduled to be released in October 2008.

Also available on Sanderson's website is a free copy of his forthcoming novel Warbreaker. This is not a polished, finished novel, but the author wanted to make one of his books free under a Creative Commons license and also thought it would be a nice way to allow readers to contribute to the novel. It's an interesting experiment, and I'll be curious to see if he will do it again.

At the end of Warbreaker, Sanderson also included excerpts from some of his other books - his award-winning debut novel Elantris, Mistborn: The Final Empire, and his young adult novel Alcatraz: Versus the Evil Librarians. (The first line of Alcatraz cracked me up.)

Go to Carol Berg's Site and Win a Free Book!

I saw on Carol Berg's website the other day that she is holding a drawing for a free autographed book of your choice! All you have to do is send her an email with the subject "drawing" and you're entered. I thought maybe you had to supply your address or which book you would like to receive if you won, but Carol responded to my email (I'm such a dork - that made my day!) and said that sending the email was all that was required.

Visit the site and scroll to the bottom for the address to send drawing entries to:
