April Reading

Well, we managed to move our stuff in the 2 days we had (less than 2 actually since we could only move after work on Monday and were moving until 9:30 at night). Now to deal with all the stuff we had to just throw wherever we could find a spot since we didn't have that much time to move in... And try not to think about the fact that we just have to do it all over again in 2 months.

Yesterday we got our Internet back finally - sort of. I gave up on it last night because it wasn't working that well. I thought today was going better, but this is now my fifth try at using the Internet tonight as it keeps going down. So we'll see how it goes...

April was the worst reading month I've had in a long time with only three books read. Almost made it to four, but the fourth book was finished a couple of days ago so it will have to be part of the May pile. Just like March, I haven't yet reviewed any of them (but at least I have reviewed all the books from March now). I'm hoping after we move for the second time things will calm down a little.

Books read in April are:

17. The Praxis by Walter Jon Williams
18. The Poison Throne by Celine Kiernan
19. The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

Favorite book of April: I liked all of these, but this is still a no brainer - The Queen of Attolia. It's my new favorite book read so far this year.

What did you read in April and what did you think of the books you read?

You're moving again in two months? Wow. I hope things calm down a bit after that!

What I read in April:
The Desert Spear, Peter V. Brett
Changes, Jim Butcher
Wicked Gentlemen, Ginn Hale
Kop, Warren Hammond
Rosemary and Rue, Seanan McGuire
The Affirmation, Christopher Priest
Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days, Alastair Reynolds
Expiration Date, Duane Swierczynski
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak

Changes and The Affirmation were the ones I liked the most.

Benjamin - We moved out of our place for 2 months while it is refinished and then we are moving back in. But this time it will be our place instead of a rental so we shouldn't have to move out anytime soon after that! At least we only had to move to the next building over, although we expected it to be a lot easier than it was since we were just moving next door.

Those sound like some pretty decent books. I still need to read the Dresden Files. I read a sample of the first book recently and it seemed like fun. Rosemary and Rue took me a while to get into but by the end I liked it and I thought the next book was a big improvement over that one.

What did you think of The Book Thief? I keep hearing the name but I don't really know a lot about it.

Kristen, ah, gotcha. Well hopefully the second move will be a bit easier then! :)

I really enjoy the Dresden Files. It does tend to be a little formulaic, but the main character's sarcastic wit and his sheer doggedness at out-witting stronger opponents tends to make up for it. Plus, there's a very strong cast of supporting characters. The first few books are the weakest so if you like those you'll probably like the rest.

The Book Thief is about a young German girl, newly orphaned and fostered in a small town outside Munich at the height of WW2. The book's narrator is the personification of Death (like Pratchett's character) and it's he who gives the girl that name as books become a large part of her identity.

It seems that the reader is supposed to be fascinated by Death as a narrator, but it didn't seem like anything special or inventive to me. On the other hand, the narrator is able to give an objective view of ordinary Germans during WW2 instead of just another story about the Holocaust. Basically, it's a good book, but it didn't blow my socks off.

So, if I've read your comment right, you'll be a home owner? If so, YAH! Congrats! But moving twice in two months? My sympathies!

Benjamin - I hope so! We're not going to unpack everything since we're just here for two months and we're hoping to get rid of some stuff so it should be easier to move back. We've decided we're good at accumulating stuff and my husband is good at packing it in so it in to small spaces and fooling us as to the amount we actually have.

Thanks for the information on The Dresden Files and The Book Thief. I'll have to try reading all of Storm Front at some point.

Orannia - Yes, I'll be an official home owner! We're going to have a refinished condo with all new appliances. I just saw your post about recently becoming a home owner - congratulations to you as well!

Yeah, the moving a lot part isn't so much fun but hopefully the next move will be easier than the first one!
